Conference history

The Queensland Music Education Conference cultivates a vital space for music educators to come together to hear from visionary speakers, work with world-class conductors, meet industry leaders in retail and tech, and explore the very latest developments in music education.

QMEC builds on the legacy and inspiration of the Maryborough Music Conference

The Maryborough Music Conference began its journey in 2001 and soon transitioned to a biennial event (2003). Initially intended to support early-career instrumental teachers within the local education district, the conference offered a space to connect with peers and pursue personal growth. Over the years, its vision expanded – along with its popularity – as it bridged a critical gap in professional development for music educators. Establishing itself as Australia’s premier music education event, the Conference welcomed top national and international educators, composers, conductors, and industry professionals, becoming a cornerstone for music education across the country.

QMEC honours the Maryborough ideals as it embraces a holistic approach to music education, covering instrumental and choral conducting, pedagogy, inclusion, Indigenous perspectives and resources, local Curricula, and emerging technologies.

The cutting-edge program also features a comprehensive trade exhibition, showcasing the very latest in products and services that support music educators and their charges.

With over 500 colleagues in attendance, QMEC continues to offer unparalleled opportunities for collaboration, development, and innovation within the Australian music community.
