Soon Hee Newbold is an internationally acclaimed composer and conductor known for incorporating differing cultural and ethnic styles in her writing inspired by her experiences and travel. She started her musical journey at the age of 5 on piano and violin at age 7 and performed as a concert artist in professional ensembles around the world.

Newbold’s works are performed by groups ranging in all levels from professional symphonies to beginning elementary ensembles in prominent venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, Disney Hall, Lincoln Center, Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and many more worldwide stages. Notable commissions include the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Merian Ensemble, the Brevard Symphony Orchestra, LA Philharmonic’s YOLA and youth orchestras for the Columbus Symphony. She was inducted into the Women Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2024.

Newbold is frequently sought after as a keynote speaker and guest clinician. She has conducted and worked with orchestras and bands throughout the U.S. and overseas such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, S. Korea, and China. As a filmmaker and composer in Hollywood, her music can also be heard in film and other recording projects.

Brian Balmages

Brian Balmages is known worldwide as a composer and conductor who equally spans the worlds of orchestral, band, and chamber music. His music has been performed by groups ranging from professional symphony orchestras to elementary schools in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Sydney Opera House, Toronto Centre for the Arts, and many more. He is a recipient of the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association and won the 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Award with his work Love and Light, which was premiered by “Pershing’s Own” United States Army Band. Additional premieres include the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the United States Coast Guard Band, Boston Brass and many others. He has served as composer-in-residence for the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, Texas Band Directors Association, Music for All, and was commissioned by the National String Project Consortium to write a multi-level work involving students from 41 sites in 22 states. He was awarded the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award from the School of Visual and Performing Arts, and in the same year was commissioned by his other alma mater, the University of Miami, to compose music for the inauguration of the institution’s 6th president, Dr. Julio Frenk. His music was also performed as part of the 2013 Presidential Inaugural Prayer Service, which was attended by both President Obama and Vice President Biden.

As a conductor, Mr. Balmages enjoys regular engagements with all-state bands and orchestras as well as university and professional groups throughout the world. Notable guest conducting appearances have included “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, United States Air Force Band, Air Force Band of the West, and performances at the Midwest Clinic, Western International Band Clinic, Maryborough Music Conference (Australia), College Band Directors Eastern Conference, American School Band Directors Association National Conference, numerous state and international ASTA conferences, Teatro dell’Aquila (Italy), and many others. He has performed in nearly all 50 states, is an elected member of the American Bandmasters Association, and is the 2024 recipient of the Phi Beta Mu International Outstanding Contributor Award. He previously served as Assistant Director of Bands and Orchestras at Towson University where he also taught instrumental conducting. Currently, he is Director of MakeMusic Publications and Digital Education for Alfred Music and MakeMusic.

Jeff King

Jeff King is currently a band consultant, adjudicator, and clinician for students and directors across the United States. Recently, Mr. King served as an Adjunct Music Professor on the faculty of The University of Texas at Arlington. Prior to this appointment, Mr. King served as the Irving ISD Director of Fine Arts for 5 years, where he oversaw all aspects of the Fine Arts programs. Prior to his administrative duties in Irving, Jeff King was a Texas band director for 31 years. Most of his teaching career was spent in Duncanville ISD, with 26 years’ experience, culminating as Director of Bands for his last five years. In 2008, Mr. King was co-conductor of the Wind Ensemble with Tom Shine, which was selected as the Texas 5A (6A) High School State Honor Band. In 2019, Mr. King along with his Duncanville HS colleagues, were awarded the prestigious Exemplary High School Band Award given by the Texas Bandmasters Association. In July of 2024, Jeff was inducted into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

Mr. King co-authored a band warm-up and technique book entitled Foundations for Superior Performance (A.K.A. The Blue Book) and The Complete Instrument Reference Guide for Band Directors. These texts are widely used throughout North America, Australia, Japan, and China. He has presented workshops in over 25 states as well as Canada. Some of his notable clinics include: The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Conference, National Association for Music Educators, Texas Music Educators Association, and the Texas Bandmasters Association. In 2007, Mr. King was the Chief Adjudicator for the Melbourne Band Festival held in Melbourne, Australia. In the summers of 2011, 2019, 2024, Mr. King traveled to China, presenting clinics to band directors and students across the country.

From 2011-2018, Mr. King served on the Texas Bandmasters Association Board (TBA), proudly serving as TBA President in 2017. Mr. King has music degrees from Southern Methodist University, (M.M. Trumpet Performance) and Baldwin-Wallace University (B.M.E), studying trumpet with James Darling and Mary Squire. His professional affiliations include the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, and the International Bandmasters’ Fraternity, Phi Beta Mu.

Jeremy Woolstenhulme

Jeremy Woolstenhulme received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Brigham Young University and a Master of Arts degree in cello performance from University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Mr. Woolstenhulme currently serves as the orchestra director of four orchestras at Northview High School in the Fulton County School District (Georgia). The Northview Chamber Orchestra had the honor of performing at the 2025 ASTA National Orchestra Festival and the 2022 Midwest Clinic under his direction. Mr. Woolstenhulme is also the director of the Atlanta Festival Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Festival Chamber Orchestra, both integral divisions of the Atlanta Festival Academy. As an active performer, he is the principal cellist of the Alpharetta Symphony Orchestra.

Prior to 2020, Mr. Woolstenhulme was orchestra director for 17 years at Hyde Park Middle School in Las Vegas, Nevada. During his tenure at Hyde Park, his award-winning orchestras performed at the Midwest Clinic and the ASTA National Conference. In 2015 and 2019, his orchestra earned first place honors at the ASTA National Orchestra Festival in the middle school division. Mr. Woolstenhulme also traveled with his orchestras to major cities around the United States and Europe. Additionally, he founded the Las Vegas String Workshop, an innovative weeklong summer camp for string students. Woolstenhulme also conducted the Las Vegas Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

With a growing number of original and arranged works to his credit, Mr. Woolstenhulme is a commissioned and published composer, many which have been performed around the world. His works are included as J.W. Pepper Editors’ Choice selections and can be found on many state festival repertoire lists. He is co-author of String Basics Books 1, 2, and 3, and is author of curriculum supplements including Vibrato Basics, Intonation Basics, and a wealth of supplemental repertoire collections and performance literature. His specialty is to write for middle and high school orchestras where he composes to teach, challenge, and inspire.

Jeremy Woolstenhulme, his wife Taryn, and their family live in Georgia and are dedicated to church activities, enjoy traveling, and love the outdoors.

Ingrid Martin

Ingrid Martin transforms lives through music. Her life-long mission: to make art music relevant, interesting, and engaging for everyone. Whether she’s leading a beginner band or a professional orchestra, she empowers musicians of all ages and abilities to uncover and share their unique artistic voices.

Distinctive in her ability to provide experiences that combine inspiring artistry and exceptional learning design, Ingrid is in demand internationally as a conductor for ensembles from primary schools to professional orchestras. Recent collaborators include the Queensland, Melbourne, Tasmanian, Christchurch, and Dunedin Symphony Orchestras, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Passionate about professional development for music teachers, Ingrid curates learning experiences for organisations including the Midwest International Band & Orchestra Clinic (USA), AUSTA, ANBOC, ASME, Musica Viva, AMEB, MSO, QSO, and the Universities of Melbourne, Sydney, and Auckland.

Ingrid shares her unique approach to musical leadership through Conducting Artistry, her online learning platform for conductor development including articles, podcasts, and online courses. In December 2022, she launched her first book Planning Effective Rehearsals: Tools to Boost Learning & Engagement, which is now used as a textbook in universities across the USA and Australia.

Modelling her advocacy for lifelong learning, Ingrid is one of five members of the 2023–2024 Australian Conducting Academy and is a 2024–2025 Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship Mentee.

Pete BarenBregge

Peter BarenBregge’s career in music spans over 50 years and embodies a unique blend of performance, education, and leadership. As a renowned saxophonist and woodwind performer, Peter’s journey began in education as a middle school band director before he entered a 20-year career with the United States Air Force premier jazz ensemble, the Airmen of Note, in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, he held the lead tenor saxophone chair and spent the last nine years as musical director, leading the ensemble through countless missions, national tours, and international performances across South America, Japan, Europe, and more.

With the Airmen of Note, Peter performed with jazz luminaries including Dizzy Gillespie, JJ Johnson, Michael and Randy Brecker, and Ernie Watts. As a civilian musician, he’s shared the stage with icons like Frank Sinatra Sr. and Jr., Tony Bennett, Lady Gaga, Johnny Mathis, and many other legendary artists.

Following his service, Peter brought his expertise to music publishing as an instrumental jazz editor for Warner Bros. Publications, and later for Alfred Music, a role he continues part-time. He also directed the Columbia Jazz Band, leading them on tours to European jazz festivals and contributing to the big band scene near Washington, D.C. In 2017, Peter relocated to Venice, FL, where he continues his work in music editing and performance.

Jenny Moon

Jenny Moon is a highly regarded choral conductor specialising in children’s and youth choirs. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Jenny is a passionate educator and advocate for choral music and is a highly sought-after conductor, choral workshop presenter and professional learning presenter.

She was a classroom music specialist for more than 30 years working in several schools in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast and currently teaches at the Griffith University Young Conservatorium. She is the Associate Artistic Director of the Voices of Birralee where she conducts their signature treble choir, Brisbane Birralee Voices and co-conducts the Birralee Kid and Birralee Singers.

Jenny has led international choral tours and achieved awards at international choral competitions in addition to numerous national awards. She has been guest conductor at Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Programs, Gondwana National Choral School, the Festival of Voices in Hobart and at various choral festivals across Australia, as well as presenting regularly at workshops and professional development programs.

Jenny has a passion for promoting Australian music to choirs and communities . She excels at engaging choristers in music across extensive styles to further develop their understanding of the world through the lens of text and music.

Stephen Leek

Freelance Australian Composer/Conductor Stephen Leek is a major and important figure in the development of choral music, music in the community and educational music in Australia. He has had long associations with some of the finest and most innovative choirs around the world including Gondwana Voices (Australia), the Tapiola Children’s Choir (Finland), Kamer…Choir (Latvia), The Formosa Singers (Taiwan), and his own choirs, vOiCeArT and The Australian Voices, that he co-founded and conducted for 16 years until 2009. As a conductor, Leek continues to work as guest conductor and adjudicator around the globe.

As a composer he established his own distinctive contemporary style back in the 1980’s. His works have broad appeal and are performed regularly by a wide selection of choirs throughout the world and has been commissioned by some of the leading choral groups. Having written 13 operas, numerous orchestral and chamber works, music for education and dance, yet, Leek is often credited as the “founder of Australian choral music” through his commitment to the innovative development of Australian choral music over the past 4 decades and through his composition of over 700 innovative choral works which explore a uniquely “Australian” colour and texture – paving the way for future generations of Australian composers to capture the sounds and energies of their own country.

A Churchill Fellow, Leek has received numerous national and international awards including the highly prestigious “Robert Edler International Choral Prize” for his contribution to the development of global choral music presented to him in Darmstaat, Germany. He has held many national and international positions including Vice President of the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) from 2011 – 2017, and 2012/13, Artistic Director of the Shanghai Youth Choir and in 2015, Conductor of the Asia Pacific Youth Choir. From 2016 until 2022, he was Artistic Director / General Manager of the Young Music Society – an awarded, self-funded, non-profit, community-based organisation that celebrated 50 years in 2019, whilst lecturing in Choral Direction at the University of Melbourne School of Music and Composition at the Australian National University School of Music in Canberra. He is exclusively published by Morton Music and currently loves in Brisbane Queensland.

Dr Andrew Butt

Dr. Andrew Butt is the Head of Performing Arts at Marist College Ashgrove, an Honorary Lecturer at The University of Queensland, and a regular performer at the Jazz Music Institute. With over four decades of experience in developing and directing high school big bands, Andrew has led ensembles at beginner to advanced levels, consistently achieving success at competitions and festivals. His diverse career spans roles as an educator, performer, composer, and producer, establishing him as a prominent figure in the Australian music scene. He is a multi-winner of the Queensland Music Awards, a recipient of the prestigious Churchill Fellowship, and has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

His talents have earned him international recognition, with performances at renowned venues and festivals worldwide, including the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, Le Baiser Salé in Paris, iF Jazz Café in Budapest, U Malého Glena Jazz Club in Prague, Sunset – Sunside in Paris, the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns, and the Paris Cat Jazz Club in Melbourne.

Andrew holds degrees in Education and Music, including a Master’s Degree from the Queensland Conservatorium – Griffith University, and a PhD in Music Performance from the University of Queensland. Throughout his career, he has studied with and been mentored by a wide range of esteemed saxophonists in Australia and the US, including Tony Hobbs, George Garzone, Chris Cheek, Bill McHenry, and Branford Marsalis. Dr Ralph Hultgren

Ralph Hultgren is currently the Artistic Director of the Australian International Music Festival – Sydney. He is a freelance teacher, composer and conductor having held tenured positions at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and the Queensland University of Technology, where he lectured in Composition, Conducting, Music Education and Instrumental Music Pedagogy. He also held an adjunct position at QCGU supervising Masters and Doctoral candidates.

Dr Hultgren has been invested into the Order of Australia as a Member in the General Division (AM). This esteemed national honour sits alongside his professional awards that include being Patron of the Maryborough Music Conference (now the Queensland Music Education Conference), becoming a recipient of the Midwest Clinic – Chicago, International Award, and was awarded the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association’s Citation of Excellence, located alongside Life Membership in ABODA.

Dr Hultgren is a member of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, a full writer member of the Australasian Performing Right Association and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society. His compositional output ranges from educational and amateur performing groups to the professional studio and stage, and his conducting credits are equally broad. He continues to conduct, by invitation, across Australia, the Asia Pacific region and North America. Dr Hultgren loves to read, to immerse himself in listening to fine music of all genres and to spend time with his grandchildren and the members of his church.

Vaughan Fleischfresser

Vaughan Fleischfresser was born in Kingaroy (Australia) and now resides in Peebles (Scotland). He has taught music at the highest level throughout Australia, the UK, and North America, having taught in institutions such as The University of Edinburgh (UK), George Heriots School (UK), Brisbane Girls Grammar School (AUS), and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (AUS), where he conducted the premier Wind Band in Australia’s largest Young Conservatorium programme.

Vaughan began his professional music career as a saxophonist in Australia, and is in high demand as a freelance saxophonist. He holds Bachelor Degrees in both Music and Education from the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane), where he studied under and was mentored by the renowned composer and conductor, Dr Ralph Hultgren. Vaughan also holds a Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music (Chicago) majoring in Wind Band and Choral Education, during which time he studied conducting under the direction of Dr Charles Menghini.

Vaughan is currently a Teacher of Music at The Edinburgh Academy, having most recently been the Teaching Fellow in Music Education at The University of Edinburgh. In addition to this, he is the Conductor of the Peebles Concert Band, and The Edinburgh University Female Voice Choir. Away from the classroom and podium, Vaughan is in high demand as an adjudicator and educational speaker.

 

Dan Quigley

Dan Quigley is a highly respected jazz educator, trumpeter, and band director with a passion for engaging youth in learning to swing and improvise. Dan is currently the Head of Brass at Villanova College and had been Head of School of Jazz Music Institute (JMI) in Brisbane for over 20 years. With extensive experience as a performer and educator, Dan specialises in developing cohesion throughout his ensembles to help drive a true swing feel. Through his work with students and ensembles over the past 25 years, he shares expert insights on energising and unifying a big band’s rhythm section for maximum groove and musicality.

Katie Argyle

Katie Argyle is a music technology in education trainer, consultant, blogger and podcaster who is passionate about helping music teachers through her business Midnight Music. She runs hands-on workshops, presents regularly at conferences in Australia and internationally and offers online training and support to music teachers all over the world. Katie’s workshops and courses focus on incorporating technology into the music curriculum and practical tips for resource creation and productivity.

Katie has been a Keynote speaker at the Australian Society for Music Education National Conference, the Music Education New Zealand National Conference and the ACT Music Educators Network Conference. In 2016, Katie launched the Midnight Music Membership Community which has become a go-to hub for hundreds of music teachers who are seeking technology-focussed professional development. She regularly presents regular live online webinars which have been attended by thousands of music teachers.

Katie has authored a keyboard and technology program for middle school students titled Studio Sessions (published by MusicEDU) and she publishes a popular annual guide called the Ultimate Guide To Free Music Tech Resources. Katie is also the host of the Music Tech Teacher podcast which was launched in early 2017 and has more than 150 episodes.

Dr Rachel Howley

Rachel Howley is Australia’s Changemaker Conductor. It is no secret to those who know her that she loves a good spreadsheet. This same insatiable love of detail and inquisitiveness for uncovering connections has made her one of Australia’s most sought-after conductors, educators and clinicians for elite youth musicians. 

Her decisively authentic and collaborative approach to music-making is highlighted by her innate ability to create extraordinary learning moments and connections among the seemingly ordinary. Her relational manner on the podium draws together players into a common musical goal, and like a well set-up spreadsheet, the clarity of performance is a testament to the depth of communication between players, the conductor and the music.

Fascinated by bold musical colours, sublime emotional connection and musical storytelling, Rachel uses her art to create change. She unapologetically works towards a more richly diverse and inclusive future where voices from all backgrounds and walks of life can be heard and valued.

Kylie Los

Kylie Los graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a Bachelor of Music (Distinction), studying piano under Mark Gibson, and was later a member of Opera Queensland’s Developing and Young Artist Programs as a repetiteur.

Kylie has had a strong involvement with Opera Queensland’s Learning and Community Programs. From 2010 – 2013, Kylie studied and worked in London and Germany, graduating with Distinction from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with a Masters of Music (Repetiteur), and completing a fellowship at the Guildhall School in which she was the assistant conductor of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro.

Kylie subsequently acted as principal repetiteur for several productions for Grange Park Opera, UK, including performing with the English Chamber Orchestra in performances. Since returning to Brisbane, Kylie has been active as an accompanist, conductor, piano teacher and adjudicator.

Dr Candace Kruger

Dr. Candace Kruger is a Yugambeh Elder and Songwoman, as well as author, composer, and academic dedicated to preserving and sharing Indigenous knowledge through storytelling, music, and education. As the founder and director of the Yugambeh Youth Choir, Candace has spent over a decade fostering cultural connection and language revitalisation through song. Her compositions and writing celebrate First Nations perspectives, weaving together traditional stories, embodied performance, and contemporary interpretations to ensure cultural integrity and intergenerational knowledge-sharing. Candace is the author of Yalgun Sun, a collaboration with the Gold Coast SUNS that brings Indigenous storytelling to a new generation through sport and community engagement. She works closely with cultural organisations, schools, and major institutions to amplify First Nations narratives in both literary and musical forms. Through her writing, music, and research, Candace continues to inspire audiences, inviting them to engage with living culture in meaningful and transformative ways.
